LOUIS' NEW BOOK & ART EXHIBITION
I would like to share with you some news about my son, Louis, who has just turned nineteen. Firstly, details about his his new book; and then, regarding an exhibition of his artworks.
A SLICE OF INSANITY: A book by Louis Morel
As many of you already know, Louis has Asperger syndrome. It has caused him much difficulty, anxiety and pain over the years, but he accepts that it is part of who he is - that without it, he would not be the same person, and would not experience life in the same way, and would not have the same creative spirit.
Louis has always loved to draw. He has also, from a very young age, developed a facility to access imaginary worlds for his amusement and no doubt also as a coping mechanism to escape the sensory overload he suffers in the "real" world; these imaginary worlds are to the forefront of his art.
With the assistance of a scribe (Louis being dyslexic), he began writing his stories and poems a few years ago, and has just completed his second book to be distributed via Amazon. The first book - Well This Is Weird - was a sort of autobiographical, stream-of-consciousness set of linked stories and dialogues through which he attempted to express something of what it was like inside his head at that time.
The new book, A Slice of Insanity, is a collection of *slightly* more conventionally-structured stories and poems that are heavily informed (still) by his experience of living with Asperger's, and which further explore his fascination with the macabre, be it through dark humour or post-apocalyptic nihilism - though the enduring message is one of hope.
If you are interested in reading Louis' book, it is available through Amazon at this link:

MIND, MATTERS AND MONSTERS:
An exhibition by Louis Morel
The Click Clock Gallery (aka the Cafe Gallery) ,
Croydon Clocktower, 9 Katharine Street,
Croydon, CR9 1NX (next to Croydon Town Hall)
6-24 June, Mon-Fri 9.30-17.30, Sat 9.30-17.00
I don't want to say too much about Louis' artworks, except that they have to be seen in the flesh, as prints, to be properly appreciated. His strong, innate sense of dynamism and composition is immediately apparent from a brief viewing online; but the astonishing beauty and subtlety of his colours and patterns are only revealed fully when seen in the giclee prints. As well as the works on the wall being for sale, the limited-edition prints are available to-order at very reasonable prices.
If coming by car, there is a handy multi-storey car park a five-minute walk away. Overground trains are frequent from Victoria to West Croydon and East Croydon, each a 10-minute walk away from the gallery.
Further information about the exhibition can be found at the event page on Facebook :

NEW PORTRAIT OF
TIM WOODWARD
I have just completed a portrait of my friend, Tim Woodward. Tim is a wonderful actor, and I am very much looking forward to seeing him (plus moustache!) on stage soon in a touring production of J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls.
Tim is also a wonderful sitter – convivial, calming, encouraging – and I was a little sad when the sessions came to an end. I love painting people close-up; for me, the human face is the most enigmatic and fascinating subject. I am keen to do more portraits, and welcome enquiries regarding commissions.

"TOM BURKE" at the ROYAL SOCIETY OF PORTRAIT PAINTERS
My portrait of Tom Burke will be hanging in the annual exhibition of the ROYAL SOCIETY OF PORTRAIT PAINTERS at the Mall Galleries, London, 16 April – 1 May (closed Sunday 26 April), open 10am – 5pm (late nights on Tuesday till 7pm).
BURGH HOUSE
I was very pleased with the recent exhibition organised by Robert Eagle at Burgh House. My work was beautifully arranged by my sister Hero Granger-Taylor, along a long white wall beneath a skylight. The attendance was good at the private view (many thanks to those who made it such a special evening), and also on the Sunday, when a steady stream of the general public (as opposed to invitees) made this the best-attended exhibition of my work since Jermyn Street days, 22 years go. I was also very happy sharing the space with Bratby, Rolt, and Stan Smith - some John Bellany, too: very different artists, all, and yet somehow complimentary.
Best wishes, Nicolas

Differently British
Works by Nicolas Granger-Taylor, John Bratby, Stan Smith and David Rolt
Exhibition at Burgh House, New End Square, Hampstead NW3 1LT
Private view on Wednesday 18th March 2015, 6.30 – 8.30pm
The exhibition runs from Wednesday 18th March to Sunday 22nd.
Open 12 – 5pm, or by appointment.
From the press release:
A living British artist renowned for his meticulously painted still lifes and nudes comes face to face with three earlier British painters who could hardly be more different. Their startlingly distinctive styles highlight the contrary nature of figurative painting in this country from the 1940s to today.
The exhibition focuses on Nicolas Granger-Taylor, a reclusive artist living in London today. Painting exclusively from life, spending weeks, sometimes months, on a single work, using sable brushes, working in oils, on fine linen canvas, his paintings have been called “cabinet pictures”, intimate pieces after hours of intense observation. The exhibition features finely detailed nude figures and still lifes that express a luxurious, rather disturbing, sense of stillness.
Facing Granger-Taylor’s paintings are works by three British artists from earlier generations – John Bratby, Stan Smith and David Rolt – boisterous by comparison. Most provocative and angry of them all is The Gorilla Within by John Bratby, a portrait from the early 1960s of a very large ape. With their bold line and colour the portraits by David Rolt (1940s) and Stan Smith (1980s) also contrast strongly with Granger-Taylor’s studied subtlety and finesse.

GALLERY REPRESENTATION
At present I am not affiliated with any gallery or agent. I am grateful to Jonathan Cooper for inviting me to exhibit with him and for hosting two exhibitions of my work. However, over time it became clear that this was not the gallery for me, nor I the artist for this gallery, and so it is time to move on. I wish Jonathan and all at the Park Walk Gallery a fruitful and exciting year ahead.
As for my work, news of future developments and exhibitions will be posted on this page and sent by email to those on my mailing list. To join the mailing list, please write to me via the Contact page.
All best wishes, Nicolas
